Well, I've been a .mac user since the service was introduced as a freebee named iTools some years back. No one really believed it would be free forever---nothing but salvation is free---so I wasn't surprised or offended when it became a paid service. It is up most of the time, is reasonable priced and has good performance. And yes, Backup works best when used with .mac, but so what? If you really need a free backup system, use Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) and just drag and drop. I don't use Backup with .mac. It's a slick program for burning to CD and DVDs, but requires .mac.
