An update from deviantArt August 13, 2008

Recently I’ve spent a lot of time on my deviantArt page as opposed to my blog.

As well as submitting new poems and content to deviantArt, I’ve also completely revamped my page and gallery. It’s now a lot more organised with categories and more information about the work.
I’ve also posted to my dA journal, and favourite’d a lot of new pieces on dA too.

I’d be grateful if my blog readers that have dA accounts would hop on over to my page and give me critique on my stuff, subscribe to me, whatever.

Thanks everyone.

Just passing on the link to an interesting article, courtesy of Lifehacker -

EOM denotes “End of Message”. By writing an email with the entire message in the subjected (followed by EOM), email gains a certain instant messaging quality.

Read the article for all of the ideas and benefits.

CLibra’s Blog, now a year old July 13, 2008

It’s now been a year since I started up this blog.
And what a ride it has been.

With around 17,000 hits to my blog, I’ve had a variety of posts on a plethora of subjects.
My most popular post has been [Bonjour for Windows...Yes? No?]

Although I’ve not posted as often as I would have liked to, I’ll try to post more (and hopefully better) articles in the next year. Thank you to everyone who’s ever linked to or commented on one of my posts – readership means a lot to me.

I hope that next year I have just as much fun running this blog as I have this year.

WordPress gets Turbo, with Gears July 7, 2008

I blog on WordPress. I worship Google Gears.
So what happened when the two fused?

Unfortunately, there’s no offline blog access.
However, WordPress makes an intriguing use of Gears that hasn’t been done before.

It downloads dashboard components to the Gears storage, speeding up access to them, so general admin & posting on the blog is faster. It’s better than native caching because it won’t get cleared on browser exit.

Hopefully, this will see the creation of a plethora of unique uses for Gears.

freshAIRapps – AdobeAIR Repository May 14, 2008

AdobeAIR is a great, cross platform app development system.
We all want to use it, but finding good apps can be difficult. Where do we look?

It catalogues AdobeAIR apps, but also gives comprehensive news, tutorials, and developer resources.
Interesting – could become AdobeAIR central.

Grow your own town, up their PageRank March 25, 2008

What an ingenious game that gives a site a ridiculous amount of backlinks!

MyMiniCity allows you to create a city (although, there’s no signup, so it isn’t really *yours*), and the population grows every time you get a new visitor, but after each day the same visitor can qualify again. After the population expands to a certain point, you can use different links to change the city (ie /tra/ would increase transport).

I had a go at creating my own, CLibraville, although it isn’t very much at the moment. I’ve seen one City with skyscrapers! Support me, become a citizen :P

And just think, people will link to their cities, in turn giving MyMiniCity a huge PageRank.
Viral? Yes! Cool? Yes! Great Concept? Definitely!

Amazon has had a makeover. As well as having a change of layout, the colour scheme is slightly different too.

Pushing the Technological Boundaries January 7, 2008

Although it’s sometimes fine, the line between the ‘virtual’ and the ‘real’ world is always there. It’s pretentious to try and send furniture via email, or create a four course meal, ready to eat in a matter of clicks. The boundary exists, but increasingly people are finding ways to blur it, merging technology with everyday life.

So what sort of thing is out there? Fab@Home is an open source platform that offers a 3D printing solution; the ‘fabber’ outputs a tangible 3d model created on the computer. The reverse of this? The Lego 3D MilkScanner.

Another interesting project is the Wii 3D Head Sensor, which uses the Nintendo Wiimote to provide accurate 3D headtracking, allowing a space & distance aware virtual simulation.

What else is being made? What is still to come?

Your Internet Parking Space December 24, 2007

Your parking space at work, you consider yours. Your locker at school, you consider yours. But what area of the Internet do you see as ‘your own’?

Most people would nominate their website or blog as their space. After all, it’s a place where they can express their views, upload content they want, etc.

However, some people prefer that their social network profile be their own, as it is a digital representation of a persons identity.

But what about age old email? It’s been around for years, and – although it has its flaws – it’s still one of the most effective means of communication. Email addresses are easy to identify, and pretty much a standard cross platform ‘nameplate’.

Email then leads onto IM. Your email address may double as your IM address, but some protocols use special ‘ScreenNames’. Once you get past the choice barrier (MSN, YIM, AIM etc), lots of IM providers offer services tied to your IM name, for example, Windows Live Spaces.

Possibly a little less heard of, but there is also an OpenID. This is basically a URL that is claimed by you and used to log into several sites, just with that URL and a single password. Lots of websites offer this in addition to a service that requires a personal URL anyway, such as LiveJournal and ClaimID.

Where do you consider ‘yours’? Click the link below to vote, and comment about it too.
