Grow your own town, up their PageRank March 25, 2008

What an ingenious game that gives a site a ridiculous amount of backlinks!

MyMiniCity allows you to create a city (although, there’s no signup, so it isn’t really *yours*), and the population grows every time you get a new visitor, but after each day the same visitor can qualify again. After the population expands to a certain point, you can use different links to change the city (ie /tra/ would increase transport).

I had a go at creating my own, CLibraville, although it isn’t very much at the moment. I’ve seen one City with skyscrapers! Support me, become a citizen :P

And just think, people will link to their cities, in turn giving MyMiniCity a huge PageRank.
Viral? Yes! Cool? Yes! Great Concept? Definitely!

The Deep Web – Really that good? March 23, 2008

The Deep Web exists as the part of the net that isn’t normally indexed by search engines, such as databases, dynamically generated pages, information inside multimedia (such as text in a video) etc.
And while many ways exist to search it, I can’t find many practical uses for it myself.

Sure, it yields a hell of a lot of information, but not what I want. I have more luck searching the “shallow” web.

What are the most useful things found by the Deep Web? Realistically, I wouldn’t need to search a US Government database, so what can I do with the Deep Web?

Nine Inch Nails do Creative Commons March 3, 2008

The amazing (and somewhat lyrically scary) Nine Inch Nails released a new collection of songs called “Ghosts I-IV” under a a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license.

What does this mean for us? Well, we get a collection of high quality, DRM free songs. I think the music industry should treat us to this more often. Not only is it good for us, it’s good band promotion and good practice to not use DRM.

Yup, that’s right, iMac’s have been invading hotels.

So what does this mean – is it a mere amenity, or marketing? You decide, either way, it’s useful to have.

I love Twitter, it’s a great concept with a lot of potential.

But d’ya know what really bugs me about it?

Not enough of my friends use it. It’d be a lot more fun if more than a two people I know use Twitter.

Any ideas on how I can encourage them?

‘Lyra’ Soundtrack January 16, 2008

The Golden Compass had some pretty awesome music, especially the end song, Lyra.
This was preformed by Kate Bush. She’s been out of the public eye for a while.

The couldn’t have chosen a better person for that song. She sounds amazing, and the lyrics – although written for the film – make it an obvious Kate song.

AHHHHHHH! Get out of my way, PDF! January 10, 2008

I just tried to open a chapter of the Heroes Graphic Novel in my browser.
Adobe Acrobat Reader popped up and my system ground to a halt.
My music stopped playing, I heard the tone of my IM messages but couldn’t read them, and I was in the middle of working on an essay. And all I can see is a haunting image of the Adobe splash screen =S

Gee, thanks.
And all I wanted was to read a single web comic. This sucks.

Foxit Reader to the rescue. It’s a light, fast and simple PDF reader that just works.
And best of all, it’s free.

It’s the start of the new term at school. What do I plan to do this year?

  1. Get through my book list.
  2. Study Japanese.
  3. Join a sports club at school.
  4. Be nicer to *groan* my sister.

Let’s see what I can do.

Review: Memories of Nobody January 5, 2008

Today, a friend and I watched the Bleach movie, Memories of Nobody, with English subtitles.

The film itself is set between the Rescue & Bount arcs, but it doesn’t fit into the actual plot of the anime.
Unidentified spirits flood into Karakura Town, and this prompts the introduction of several new characters, and revelation to the question of what’s ‘between’ Soul Society and the Living World.

It was funny to watch, what with Kon’s sense of humour and Ichigo’s ignorance playing the same parts they do in the anime, but the ending still left some un-answered questions.

The animators were a little lazy by leaving the people in the background static for no apparent reason, and a certain scene bore a resemblance to DragonBall Z, but other than that, the film was interesting deviation from the series.

This is something that I got from a friend a few years back, and I shunned the idea at first, but after I while I found out that it’s truly useful.

Like many other peoples desktops, mine was littered with files, downloads, programs and folders. It looked a mess, and you could hardly see the background.

The picture above is (with my background removed) what I did.
I created an overflow folder, with several category folders inside.
Now I just drag my desktop rubbish into these.
